Beauty of Grey or Gray

I can never remember which one is the spelling of grey. I don’t really care (but I’m certain someone will inform me in the comments). Up until two or three years ago I thought that everything was black or white. Straight up or straight down. Far left or far right. Whatever analogy you want to use. That’s my personality really. I am an extremes kind of guy. Kristen asked me today if I thought I should trim up my nasty little beard thing (she didn’t really use all those adjectives, but I know that’s what she meant). I said maybe I should cut it off completely or maybe never cut it again. I just can’t seem to find middle ground.

As I said, “up until about three years” ago. That’s when I started to think maybe grey areas exist more so than I think, and maybe they are not a bad thing. And then last year I was riding down the road and heard this song called “the Beauty of Grey” on a CD a friend of mine had loaned me. The song is not really about grey issues, its about race, but I began to think, “You know, there are so many grey areas, and I don’t have to be afraid them. There is beauty in that. Beauty in the fact that God has made each of us unique with different world views and ideas about life.”

Here’s the video.

So what’s your take. Do my comments frustrate you or do you celebrate them?

Here is just another good song by the same band.

  1. if you are taking votes in the black/white realm- start over on the goatee thing. Otherwise yes, I vote for a middle ground trim :) Gray (grey) does exist- however sometimes it exists because we don’t want to confront the fact that really it is black and white and sometimes we must choose. Sometimes it is just grey…

and it may be me, but i can’t see the video- it’s just white boxes. Or maybe they are light grey boxes….

  2. Trim the the goatee, not off just those few hairs that have a mind of their own and stick out way to far.

  3. When I was young, everything was black and white, right and wrong. As I get older, there seems to be much more areas of grey (or gray), and I don’t mean in my hair. I think the “black and white” thinking must help us get through those perilous years of youth, and with age comes wisdom that everything is not always as it seems.

The goatee is cool, doesn’t bother me how scraggly it is, as long as it doesn’t impair you singing into the microphone, or dangle on your guitar strings.
