What does it mean to “transcend culture”?

I wrote last week about cultural relevance and how that’s just not good enough for the church. We ought to be putting out great artists, incredible musicians, excellent communicators, unique and original voices that lead culture rather than merely “keeping up” with what just happened (that’s what people in the south do with the big cities of the east and west coast and what the people of the east and west coast do with Europe).

So what does it mean to you for the church to transcend culture? Or does this post make you go, “what is he talking about.” Let me know that too.

  1. Who does Europe look to for culture creation? And also, when is the day that the culture leaders will look to the Church for inspiration? I want to use my gifts to propel the Church into a place where they lead and create culture rather than struggle to keep up.

  2. This might be why Jesus dealt with culture like He did… “You have heard it said…, but I say…”

Then Paul came along and said to the Athenians, “You have these gods and then there is the unknown god – let me tell you who that unknown God really is…

This is the church’s challenge – Not to disagree with everything culture has to say, but to challenge everything we hear. To compare all to the reality that is Christ.

If we are aware of, and giving an answer for, everything we hear, then we will be making statements that are relevant – thus, I think, to be relevant, we must listen to culture – but all the while through Jesus filter.
