I try (but often fail) to… become genuinely interested in, and learn, what “they” are interested in, what they are passionate about, what makes them tick, whatever that may be…

If someone is telling you about it, then it is important enough to them to put a voice to. The hardest thing I deal with is the “me too” thoughts when someone is telling me something. When I focus on those thoughts, I generally stop listening to them and wait for them to finish so I can tell them my story.
To combat this, I usually ask them another question regarding what they have said. This helps me focus on what the other person has told me, more than on myself…
