Thoughts on Jesus
I’m still on my journey through Luke. And I will continue to periodically update you on my thoughts about Jesus that are spawned from Luke’s account of His life.
What struck me the most today was the second part of verse 12 in chapter 6. It says, “and spent the night praying to God.” Wow.
I know that prayer does not mean that you are talking the whole time, there should be a lot of listening going on as well, but the fact that he prayed all night, talked, listened, meditated, is huge to me. I don’t make it more than a few minutes before my mind starts wandering. I try to have something to write on when I pray because I often end up thinking about things I need to do. So I will write those down on the pad or paper to remember to do them, this helps me forget about it and move on. I don’t think Jesus did that though. I imagine He was so connected, the only thing He thought abou that He had to do was pray.
As with everything He did, this prayer time seems very intentional. And it was apparently monumental if Luke, the great historian wrote it down. Since He was not there, this would have been second hand information from an eyewitness. That means, people around Jesus must have recognized how important this night was.
Reading only a few verses later, you can see that the next day, Jesus begins teaching and it’s what we refer to as the “Sermon on the Mount.” These are some of the most difficult sayings from Jesus. This is the stuff He really came to teach, and even more so, live out. He spent a night praying because the next day was a benchmark message in His ministry.
I wish I could say I prepared that much for the important events in my own journey.
