the World as deaf and blind // part, the last
“Warning! Confusing and random thoughts from me lie ahead.”
So, to finish out the thought process from the last post about the church being deaf and blind, I have to say that at some point, I imagined the world being the same way. Except I think I was able to play this one out a little further in my head.
Here’s the thing though, to reiterate what was previously stated, the world, as Helen Keller, has no ability to “get” the concepts we are tying to force on them. I’ll hammer morality for a minute, as broad and as sweeping as that one concept can be. So often the church is imposing issues of morality on the world, the people not in relationship with Christ, and then she’s (the church) frustrated when the world doesn’t live it out. Unlike Helen Keller though, the world will never get the morality deal, because they have no way of understanding it. There is nothing inside that’s ever going to “click” in order for them to understand these issues and so they won’t until their hearts are regenerated and brought to life in Christ.
But, we forge ahead anyway. Dropping every idea we can on to deaf and blind souls that can never understand what we’re saying.
And probably, one other issue that is tacked on to this, is that the world is saying, “Wait a second, you are trying to teach me a concept, and you’re saying its one way, but yet you are living a different way. How am I supposed to learn the concept from you when it doesn’t appear as though you understand the concept.”
Bam, there it is.
We will never be Annie Sullivan, Keller’s teacher, in this. We cannot be “patient” enough with the world until they understand. Rather, we have to bring them to the one that can heal deafness and blindness and bring understanding and allow Christ to tranform as opposed to our meager attempts at behavior modification.
