Forceful advancement // I’ve been overtaken

Randomly, I’m in one of those very emotional moods. Okay, so really, its not so random, I just cry a lot…I’m a baby like that.

Today, as we worshiped as a body of Believers at Cornerstone, my heart was moved deeply. There were several technical difficulties throughout the day, but they did not matter so much as I listened to the word God was speaking through Jonathan (normally I’d call him biscuet [and yes, like my nickname, the 'b' is lowercase], but you’d probably say, “Hey, didn’t he misspell biscuit?” or you might say, “wait, did he say a biscuit was talking to him?”). The Spirit was just breaking over me, and then we were singing “Came to the Rescue” and Leslie Agerton walked up with Benjamin, and I was pretty much done. Despite the fact that I was thinking about my own mother and father bringing the gospel to another part of the world, something goes off inside of releasing the floodgates when parents walk up with their children to kneel at the alter in prayer.

What biscuet said that caused me to write a note on my “palm pilot” (see picture) was that the kingdom of God came down and that it was advancing. It made me think of Matthew 11:12 where the author records these words, “the kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing…” One commentary noted this, “The advancement of the kingdom of God, that gracious rule in the hearts of believers brought about by the preaching of the Gospel, was progressing in powerful ways.” That’s about what biscuet said today, “progressing forward in powerful ways.”

That excites me. The kingdom is not just sluggishly moving forward in a haphazard way with hopeful desires of finding fulfillment. Its advancing, moreover, it’s doing so forcefully, with purpose. Made me wonder if I’m standing in the way and why I don’t always see it. Are we looking in the wrong places, or is it just that it has moved on to a different location?

  1. Brian, I have only been a member of Cornertone about a year and a half now. But I honestly must say, your praise band, and you in particular as lead, make my worship there so fulfilling. The songs, the enthusiam of the band, Rusty, Josh, all of Cornerstone has become a feeding place for my soul. You are so filled with the spirit is spills out thru song. Thanks again for what you do.
