today is today // tomorrow is just another day

So Christmas is always a little frustrating because of the commercialism.

The New Year is always frustrating because of the nostalgia.

Here’s the thing. People get past Christmas and in one week they start thinking about the past year and all they’ve done and then they start thinking about how “the New Year will be different.” This always baffles me. What’s the big deal with New Years. Ironically enough, tomorrow’s a holiday, so its not like people will be getting up any earlier or working any harder.

Anyway, what this post really comes down to is part of what I was able to share with our church on this past Sunday morning. Paul wrote in Philippians chapter three, “…But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” In context, when Paul refers to “forgetting what is behind,” he is not referring to his ‘pre-Christ-follower’ existence, rather, he is referring to his current journey, the race he is presently running. That is, he is forgetting about past successes and not resting on them, assuming that they are enough. He does not consider reveling in them a worthy pursuit of his time. On the contrary, he would prefer to act as if they did not happen and press forward. Looking back only wastes time. Look forward!

So this whole, “here are my top ten posts from the year,” and “oh, remember all those things we did this year,” those things are just not for me.

I’m not trying to be a scrooge. In fact, I love celebrating and hanging out with friends. However, the last thing I want to do is get caught up looking behind me, or even caught up in the “next year…” I want to let today be today and let tomorrow just be another day. I want to strain towards what is ahead and press on toward the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
