living missionally // or not

On Wednesday of last week I had the opportunity to sit in a room with about 20 very missionally minded people and have a conversation with Don Golden, co-author of Jesus Wants To Save Christians. It was a pretty weighty conversation that revolved mostly around our theology. My spirit was wrestling. God is clearly taking me down a path right now in search of some deeper truths about what being a ‘follower of Christ’ means. This conversation came right on the heals of me beginning a new book called Deep Church. So there will be much conversation coming on all that soon, I’m certain. But, I was reminded Tuesday about a phrase that I’ve been working out in my mind for the past year or so, it’s not perfected yet, but basically it, “Our theology affects our practicality.” The last word kind of keeps changing (partly because I think there is a better word that rhymes that will explain more of what I mean).

The question that was posed to us was, “Why don’t more people live missionally?”

A myriad of answers were thrown out, but it comes down, I think, to our theology, what we believe about God, how we relate to him, how he relates to this world, and how we relate him to the this world. Our theology affects how we live, our reality, practicality, actuality.

My head is still spinning as I’m trying to process the new journey that I began last week. Hopefully, I’ll begin to see some clarity on it this week.

random, I know…
