Uganda // Reunions
I can’t think of many better things than to wake up to the sunrise that we woke up to this morning and then go to bed exhausted like we are tonight. This was a killer day of amazing sites, sounds, and smells, watching a few people hit the “I’m on the verge of being overwhelmed by all this” button, and sweet reunions.
After a slow start of continuing to adjust to Uganda, we arrived in Buloba shortly after lunch today. A few on our team met the child they sponsor for the first time and tears abounded. It was beautiful to see the instantaneous bond of two people that had never met before. After brief introductions, and without skipping a beat, 12 mzungu’s (white peoples) from Alabama were engaged of 3 hours of games with more kids than I can count (but that’s not really a fair assessment since I don’t do the maths well…there were a lot). Language barrier, give me a break. A rope, a Frisbee and circle of people and you can play games for hours on end…which we did. Thanks to Michael, we even played some new games that were made up literally on the spot.
As we left Buloba today, I compiled a top ten list, in no particular order of, “Oh yeah, that’s what I love about this place!”
- Godfrey’s laugh and love for the kids in Buloba (you’ll hear more about him later).
- Really long hellos
- Really long goodbyes (even if you are coming back in a short 12 hours)
- Jump rope for hours
- The real smell of life
- Energy from a ton a kids that never seems to end
- Awkwardness and hearing, “Thank you, please” a whole lot
- Knowing in your gut that “although you think you know what you are doing, the reason they are laughing is because you don’t.
- The never ending shouting of “Mzungu”
- Knowing there’s a seriously deep connection with these people half way around the world that is centered on Christ.
And if I was able to put an 11 in there, it would be driving a boda boda…that’s right, I drove it.
As always, you can check out Lee’s side from here.
